Doctorate Honoris Causa in Computer Science On April 21, 2015, Marco Dorigo will receive a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Computer Science from University of Pretoria, South Africa.

IRIDIA has been instrumental in the creation of CluePoints, a new company that determines the quality, accuracy and integrity of clinical trials using data-mining algorithms. Data quality is assessed centrally, by comparing the results of the different centers (e.g. hospitals) that participate in the study. This project was at first financed by a FIRST Entreprise Doctor (Region Wallonne) and is still financed by the Region Wallonne, through a BioWin grant in collaboration with IDDI, GSK Pharma and the UCL.
IRIDIA is a partner in the EU FP7 project COLOMBO, which focuses on the usage of swarm intelligence techniques and automatic configuration and tuning processes in traffic control. Current traffic control systems cope with the ever increasing road traffic by determining the situation on the road network and by controlling traffic flows. Emerging cooperative techniques like vehicle-to-infrastructure communication increase the knowledge about road traffic participants and open new channels for delivering information to those. However, most cooperative systems require large penetration rates in order to assure their functionality, making the first steps towards their deployment unattractive. COLOMBO works on overcoming this hurdle by delivering a set of modern, self-organizing traffic management algorithms designed for being applicable even at low penetration rates, asserting their usability from the very first deployment days on. COLOMBO will focus on two traffic management topics: traffic surveillance and advanced traffic light control algorithms. Cost-efficiency and the reduction of vehicular emissions are the project’s key targets.

E-SWARM is a project funded by the European Research Council - Advanced Grants program of the European Union (Grant 246939). Its goal is to develop a rigorous engineering methodology for the design and implementation of artificial swarm intelligence systems.
