He received the Diplom (German equivalent of M.S. degree) in Business Engineering from Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Karlsruhe, Germany in 1994, and the PhD degree and the "Habilitation" in computer science both from the Computer Science Department of Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany in 1998 and 2004, respectively.

He is author of the two books "Stochastic Local Search: Foundations and Applications" (co-authored with Holger Hoos) and "Ant Colony Optimization" (co-authored with Marco Dorigo). He has published extensively in the wider area of metaheuristics (more than 140 peer-reviewed articles in journals, conference proceedings, or edited books). His research interests range from stochastic local search (SLS) algorithms, swarm intelligence, automated design and configuration of algorithms, multi-objective and stochastic optimization to SLS algorithms engineering.
